Phantom Pilot, Vietnam Ace

Greetings! Got the chance to cover the Colorado Aviaition Historical Society's annual Hall of Fame induction ceremony. it is always a fabulous gala that humbles me. Where else in Colorado could you enter a ballroom with so many famed aviators and contributors to flight? This year the keynote speaker was Phantom Pilot and Vietnam Ace, Steve Ritchie. Brig. Gen (Ret) Ritchie took down the obligatory five MiG-21s during his tour in Vietnam. it is simply amazing to me to have so many opportunities to cover and hear the the true stories of heroism—from the heros themselves. Among the other shot I got, this one in particular moved me the most. Here stands a man of great contribution to his country, alone in the wings listening to the emcee recount his aerial accomplisments. He just seems lost in the moment and reflective.—totally unaware of the camera. These are the kinds of shots I live for.... Cheers, D

Real photographers always wear...

...safety rigging under their vest! Most people moonlight at Pizza Hut. I moonlight with the United States Air Force. And this week I got to join an Army videographer (also a great friend of mine) on a shoot for the National Guard's High Altitude Aviation Training Site located in Eagle, Colorado. We spent a day photographing students and the next two days aboard a UH-60 Blackhawk. Our task was to capture the exhilaration and applicability of high-altitude aviation for a new web site and marketing collaeral that Dave is designing. These guys teach some of the best and brightest helicopter pilots in the DoD. I met a female pilot there who had just graduated from her primary flying school only a few months ago and willl be on her way to Afghanistan in December. All I can say is, "You go girl!" Dave and I rode around with the commander and chief instructor who, with the kind assistance of the crew chief, dropped us off on a variety of landing zones (LZs) ranging in altitude from 8400 feet (pictured here) to 12, 200 feet. Whew! Schlepping gear at altitude is not my favorite way to work out... Anyway, Dave grabbed this happy snap of me in my safety rigging and photo vest just seconds before the 101st Airborne came in. Because we were shooting from a helicopter with doors open (you damn skippy it was freezin') I had to wear the special safety rigging to keep me from falling out. They fondly call it a "Monkey Harness." No comments from the peanut section please! Anyway, my hat's off to these talented men and women who so bravely serve our nation. Hoo-ah, ya'll Cheers, D

Technology Can't Stop This...

Hi everyone,
Just a qucik update to let you know that I am STILL waiting on Pictage to recover from some technology problems last week when we uploaded Heather and Jason's event. Several phone calls and a wait list for photogrpaher support finds us here on Friday still waiting. I have a promise they will be up with this event by the weekend. So do keep your fingers crossed.
Meanwhile, I thought I'd post a few more shots of our lovely bride.
I particularly like this one. It was a last minute effort to get Heather to take some time for herself. She spent most of her wedding day morning helping friends and family—but that's just how Heather is. She totally puts everyone else before herself. Anyway, I got her over by window, straightened the dress, and pressed the shutter. I truly love the soft focus filter and the grain... And how can you beat Heather's smile?

My Friend, Miss Patty

"What a Dame!" Hi everyone. Just going through a few photos from our next-to-last trip to Olahoma. Barry and I flew back to my hometown. One of the grandest ladies I know is Miss Patty. She is the mother of my childhood friend K.Kaye. K.Kaye and I have known each other since kindergarten. yes, kindergarten... easy to do if you grew up in a small town. But Miss Patty is my hero. Here she is in her hot, little red, convertible. She's complete with shades and a fresh coat of lipstick. Miss Patty lives life outlound and in full living color. She travels, and is an accomplished ballroom dancer. She even has a trophy case to prove it. Here's Miss Patty in our little plane with Barry at the Pogue Municipal Airport (KOWP) in Sand Springs, Oklahoma. She has her headset on and her pre-flight brief all done and is ready for for some serious co-piloting. I love to just grab the camera and squeeze off a few shots —no matter where I am or who I am with. For me, it's all about the moment. And I love nothing more than to catch a genuine smile. Magic! Cheers, D
